We’re thrilled to share that we have successfully completed our 2025 workshop, welcoming 15 participants who met and worked with over 25 instructors virtually and in-person throughout our six days in L.A.

Program Update 13: Care & Conservation Indigenous Collections Workshop

Join our in-person cost-free workshop
in Salamanca, NY! Transportation, accommodation and per diem are included. Our two instructors will demonstrate hands-on basic conservation and collections care based on participants’ interests and needs. These may include box building, storage design, pest management, object cleaning, mold remediation, and more!

Are you interested in preserving art and cultural heritage? Come learn about conservation and this upcoming unique and exciting summer program! The Andrew W. Mellon Opportunity for Diversity in Conservation is a program that introduces students and recent graduates from historically underrepresented communities to the field of cultural heritage conservation, a field that engages with artistic and scientific understanding of materials and their meanings to preserve human expressions.


Program Update 11: Intern Celebration

We’re delighted to share that we celebrated recent Mellon Opportunity for Diversity in Conservation internship accomplishments in person for the first time since 2019. Ten interns from two previous workshop cohorts returned to Los Angeles and were joined with their internship supervisors and loved ones: parents, siblings, partners, and friends to share and celebrate their accomplishments.


Program Update 10: 2022 Workshop

We’re thrilled to share that the Mellon program, after a COVID hiatus and remote program, hosted the first live workshop since 2019! The jam-packed 6 day workshop happened in July and included 17 students and 25 guest presenters.


Program Update 9: NEH funded Collections Care Classes Offered

We welcome applications for our online courses on Preservation of Indigenous Cultural Collections, generously funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. These are graduate level courses available to those seeking opportunities for professional development outside of a graduate program. Ideal participants are currently, or plan to become caretakers of American Indian cultural resources, either in cultural centers or museums.

We’d like to give a big, warm welcome to the 2022 cohort! We’re thrilled to invite this accomplished group of students to attend our first in-person workshop in Los Angeles since the summer of 2019.

Program Update 6: Calling all teachers, mentors & friends!

The Mellon Opportunity fully plans to offer a 6-day conservation workshop during the summer of 2022 in Los Angeles. In anticipation of this 2022 summer workshop and with applications due in the new year, we are enlisting your help in sharing this opportunity with potential participants who are inspired by culture and science.


Program Update 5: 2021 Online Workshop

We’re thrilled to share that the 2021 online workshop was a rousing, exhausting, and exhilarating success! Over the course of the two-week workshop an incredible camaraderie was formed. The students learned about and discussed so many aspects of the field of conservation with dozens of instructors.


Program Update 4: Preparing for an Online Workshop

After postponing the 2020 summer workshop we are thrilled to be preparing for the upcoming online 2021 summer workshop. Over the last few months we’ve developed a robust, two-week program for students who will be attending from five different time zones. One benefit of online learning is that we were able to invite over 30 distinguished guest speakers and instructors to join us in dozens of hands-on activities and presentations on a wide range of topics.


Program Update 3: Graduate School Admissions

The Mellon Opportunity for Diversity in Conservation is committed to removing obstacles that prevent underrepresented students from securing access to graduate conservation education. We are thrilled to share news about our first program participants who have secured placements in graduate schools.


Program Update 2: Online Collections Care Class Offered

We want to share that in the fall of 2020 our team offered an online course through UCLA Extension on Collections Care for Tribal Materials.


Program Update 1: Welcome 2020/21 Cohort!

We’d like to welcome the 2020 cohort, who due to COVID-19 will participate in the workshop in July 2021. We’re excited to welcome this accomplished group to the program and look forward to meeting them in person next summer!
